Entertainment
The Market Pubs provided an eclectic variety of entertainment for its patrons :
- In 1797 the major attraction at the King’s Head was the "greatest" man in the world, namely
an Irish Giant with the stage name O'Brien (real name Patrick Cotter) who was eight foot four inches tall
(his skeleton is preserved in the museum of the College of surgeons).
- In August 1806 patrons of the Church Stile were invited to meet "a most surprising crocodile from
the Nile ever seen in the kingdom. He is so remarkably tame that any lady or gentleman may touch him with
safety"
- On 27th December 1783 there was much excitement when "A Capital Collection of Wild Beasts" whre
on display at the Star Inn. These included a beautiful lion, from Algiers, and an amazing large Black Wolf
from Siberia.
