In the early part of the 20th century Whittlingham was a popular pleasure spot for City dwellers as it was accessable and, similar to Mousehold Heath, represented fresh air and feeling of being in the country.

Whittlingham could be accessed from either side of the river either Thorpe via the pontoon bridge or Whittlingam Lane. During times of national celebration such as Edwards VII's coronation huge crowds flocked to the riverside.

The coming of the Trams in 1900 brought a connection to Trowse station which further facilitated access to Whittlingham.
