This year Norwich Heritage Projects are supporting the City of Ale initiative to encourage a better understanding of the importance of the brewing and pub industry to Norwich and Norfolk. We have organised the following diverse range of events designed to give an insight into our unique heritage. For full details of all City of Ale events visit the City of Ale website.

Film Shows and Display at Fusion at The Forum: All free entry with no need to book 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 5pm
Thursday 31st May – Saturday 9th June (CLOSED Sunday 3rd  to Tuesday 5th  June )

Call in to the magnificent Fusion Screen in the Forum to see a series of films that showcase the stories and characters behind Norwich’s pubs and breweries, both past and present. The films will be complemented by a display that pulls together anecdotes, photos and facts which give a compelling insight into a fascinating subject.

Lunchtime Talks at Fusion at The Forum.  All talks at 1pm – 2pm (Free events. No booking required)

Heritage walking tour led by a Blue Badge Guide. £3 per person. Booking recommended but not essential. (Click green circle below to book.)

‘Beer Around the Cathedral’: Meet your guide at the Erpingham Gate (Cathedral) for a fascinating tour encompassing some of the earliest breweries in the City. A walk along the river and Bishopgate will bring to light the history behind the many pubs which are located in this attractive part of the City.

‘St Benedicts, Anchor Brewery and Pottergate’: Meet your guide outside St Gregory’s Church (Pottergate) for a tour which will take in the former Anchor Brewery site. As you are led around this intriguing area of Norwich you will be regaled with the history of the host of hostelries which you will pass during this enjoyable walk.

Monday 4th June: Blue Badge Guide Gwen Digby will lead a tour of the ancient Curat House. Once home to Messrs Back & Sons Ltd, wine merchants, it is better known to many simply as Backs. .

Friday 8th June: A guided walk around Pockthorpe, by Dale Wiseman, taking in part of Barrack Street and the old Sportsman public house. The tour includes a visit inside Cherry Lane House to view the offices, rooms and layout of the building which used to house Steward & Patteson’s main office. The tour concludes at the historic Adam & Eve pub on Bishopgate.

Tuesday 5th June - 7.30 pm Traditional Pub Games Night at the Ribs of Beef 
Join Roger and Anthea Cawdron, for an evening of traditional pub games at the Ribs of Beef (Fye Bridge Street). (Free Event. No booking required).

Thursday 7th June. 8pm start : Nostalgic Pub Quiz at the ‘Murderers’ (Timber Hill)
This is the quiz for those who remember the days when they went to hear Black Anna sing at the Jolly Butchers and ordered a pint of ‘twos’.  An informal, fun-night for teams of six. (Free event. No booking required)
